IAP Cochin Branch, way back in 1995 conceived and implemented the idea of starting a Centre for comprehensive management of the then ill understood and rarely diagnosed condition of LD in Cochin, the first of its kind in the state. Besides evaluation and remediation of LD, the Centre started conducting awareness programs for schools, parents, public and professional groups through physical sessions, print and electronic media. This was primarily intended to equip parents and teachers suspect the problem of LD if present, in early class itself so that they could refer these children for further evaluation when the child is in 2nd or 3rd Std. But the ground reality was, our objectives were far from being fulfilled; we were getting referrals when the child was in 9th or sometimes 10th Std. Intervention at this age yield very poor result. We need to ask parents about their child’s school performance whenever they visit us for any medical condition or immunization.
We need to urge parents to suspect the problem when they observe or feel that their child;
